NEGRO / BLACK AMERICANS / AFRICAN AMERICAN INVENTORS

John Burr (1848–?) was an African American inventor born in Maryland to parents who were enslaved and later freed. It is believed that Burr may have been born into slavery, but he gained his freedom at the age of 17. As an adult, he became a notable inventor, best known for his invention of the lawn mower blade that was more effective and efficient than previous designs. He patented this innovative design in 1899.
Burr's invention significantly improved the functionality of lawn mowers, making them more practical for both commercial and personal use. His contributions helped shape the modern lawn mower, and his work was a part of the larger African American legacy of inventiveness, despite the many social and racial challenges he faced during his lifetime.
